Using alter egos to progress in business

This was an interesting podcast on how developing an alter ego can help people do better in business.

As human beings, we all have certain weaknesses, insecurities, or general character traits that might hinder our performance in business. While these are not necessarily bad or negative traits, they just might not be whats needed when it comes to growing a business.

By developing an alter ego, we can allow ourselves to step into a different mindset in order to perform better and push past our natural limits.

While listening to this, I realised that I’ve actually used this tactic subconsciously (and on a much smaller scale) to perform better in different aspects of my own life.

For example, I’m afraid of public speaking and get very nervous when I need to deliver presentations. In order to push past this, I self pep-talk and bring myself to a mindset that is confident and fearless when speaking to an audience. I try to rewire my thoughts to build a sense of bravado that allows me to be the person that I need to be in that moment. Once I push past the fear and get myself into the right mindset, the actual task that I need to perform (e.g.: deliver a presentation) becomes a breeze.

When I heard the podcast, I realised I was on some level putting this tactic into play, and it really has helped me. This podcast takes it to a whole other level and explains how using alter egos as a proper strategy that can help individuals push past their own limits so that they can excel at performance.
