Why an online business is something to consider

Digital marketing and online business - these are two things I love.

I’ve wanted to start an online business for as long as I can remember. I’d always go down different rabbit holes as a teenager, experimenting with selling apparel online, creating an online blog, playing with the dropshipping model, or thinking about starting a Youtube channel.

The first time I ever attempted to make my own blog was probably around the age of 14 or 15 - it was a personal blog. I then tried my hand at a beauty blog, after which I tried a business/motivation blog. I built up a mini-brand for designer phone accessories inspired by Indian culture. I even bought a flipped dropshipping store to try my hand at selling biking accessories online!

I just always, always had this fascination of making money online. Something about the idea felt very empowering to me. One of my core values has always been freedom, so that might also be one of the reasons the online world always appealed to me so much.

Perhaps it was also influenced by my father, who has raised a family of 5 off his online business, sitting at home in his shorts.

Luckily for me, I accidentally landed up building a career in digital marketing, which sat nicely with the online business world.. I guess it was just meant to be!

But while I’ve always loved the idea of an online business, I wanted to talk about why building an online business is something more people should consider - not just from the perspective of passion and freedom, but also from the perspective of it being a real asset and need in today’s pretty volatile world.

Relying solely on one income and being overly dependent on your job can be pretty dangerous in this generation. And one of the quickest ways to bridge the gap and have a secondary income is through starting an online business, and below are 3 reasons why I find it to be one of the top choices to consider.

Low overhead expenses

Unlike starting a full-fledged business that needs an office space (where you need to pay for rent, utility bills, perhaps even full-time employees), an online business can be started with barely any investment at all. I think this is one of the main reasons so many people find it attractive, because it’s low risk and doesn’t need a lot of capital upfront. The barriers to entry are pretty easy for most people to overcome. It makes an online business something that’s attainable and actually possible for almost anyone.

Easy to scale with a worldwide market

This is one of the best parts about doing business online - you aren’t just limited to your locality, you have the whole world open to you to do business with. Of course, this can also depend on the kind of online business you’re doing - perhaps you’re selling physical goods online, and can currently only ship to specific locations. But, you get my point. When you’re building your brand and visibility online, you have a HUGE audience you can reach out to and do business with. Especially if you’re dealing with digital products or consulting/coaching services.

Time and location flexibility

Apart from the regular reasons that this is a pro (being your own boss, choosing your own hours etc etc), it’s also an advantage to consider when you’re still working a 9 to 5. The fact that you can run a business online and choose your own hours gives you so much more flexibility in terms of making space to actually work on your own business.

At the end of the day, an online business can be cheap, simple and profitable.

It’s one of the best and quickest ways to build an income-generating asset for yourself, which is something that’s important to build in the current times.

It’s something that I’ve always had a passion for, but something I highly recommend everyone to think of considering.

The future (and present too, honestly!) of the world is online, and this is the prime time to set yourself up with an online presence if you haven’t already.
